In case you haven't already heard the news: BBC One is going to make a six-part miniseries of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell! It will be directed by Toby Haynes. There's not yet available any information about the casting.

Rumoured as a film adaptation for years, the sheer scale of the novel and number of effects needed may be somewhat daunting, but Toby Haynes has a strong track record at succeeding with ambitious material, having been responsible for Doctor Who's The Pandorica Opens / Big Bang two-parter, and the Sherlock series two finale The Reichenbach Fall. Adapting Clarke's book will be writer Peter Harness, who penned the third series of Wallander. (denofgeek.com)

I hope this won't become an Epic Fail but I'm somewhat afraid... The previous works of Toby Haynes (like Doctor Who & Sherlock) have not made me really impressed so far. What do you think?

Also, I'd like to repost the link to the JSMN tumblr blog I mentioned earlier, just because it is so hilarious: littlestrangeandnorrellthings.…

Hope it'll be something interesting. At least, i want to see the shot of Jonathan Strange's Animam Evocare during the war.

Personally I'm a big fan of Doctor Who and Sherlock and I did like those particular episodes, so I feel like he may do a good job. Although I do agree that adapting it into only 6 parts could be difficult. Overall I'm excited for this to happen, but I won't be too disappointed if it turns out badly...in the past few years I've kind of stopped expecting movies adapted from books to be perfect representations of the story. :P

Ooo, I have a nasty feeling they'll take alot of liberties with adapting it for a modern tv audience. That lovely feeling in the book simply wouldn't work on primetime. Ripper Street springs to mind - sex & violence done up in Victorian togs. And six parts?? Should be 12 at a minimum.
Still, you never know!

... "Sex and violence" <-- This really made me think a little too much about how these topics would fit in a JSMN tv series! :XD:

Well, I agree, six parts won't be enough. They have to take a lot of liberties with adapting...

I am dreading this so much. I mean, I love the BBC, and I do like Toby Haynes' work, I haven't seen any of Harness's work as far as I know, not enough to remember his name at any rate. Thing is, it will probably be good, but JSMN is so big to me that I won't be satisfied with good, I need it to be great. Whenever I hear someone's "fancast" of a TV series for this book, I immediately recoil with a definitive NO to at least half the ideas, and that has alerted me to my rather unachievable expectations. I'm going to have to calm down a great deal to be able to enjoy the TV adaption.
So yeah, I can't wait.

Oh, and that tumblr is still among my favourites :D

Crossing fingers, but glad that at least someone is trying to adapt it. And many years down the line, it may be only one of many adaptations!

Whether the series fails or not, the book will still be fantastic. :D Regardless, I'm psyched! BBC has a good reputation, I trust them.

Haha, youre welcome. (I had to check this twice, too, for I wasn't sure this can be true. But yeah, it wasn't just a rumor or anything, which is quite nice, I think as well.)
